Clears Heat, resolves toxicity, generates fluids and soothes the throat; Detoxifies the liver.

Clears Heat and generates fluids

  • Cools mild heat conditions, especially in the Lungs and Stomach, while nourishing the body's fluids. This is particularly beneficial for a dry, sore throat accompanied by a hot sensation, especially resulting from Yin Deficiency rather than an acute infection. The bitter and sour flavors work synergistically to produce saliva and alleviate dryness.

Benefits the throat and opens the voice

  • This herb is primarily known for soothing inflamed, swollen, or dry throat tissues and alleviating hoarseness. Its cool, astringent properties gently tighten and firm the irritated mucous membranes while reducing local heat. Consequently, it is the main ingredient in throat lozenges used to treat chronic pharyngitis, laryngitis, and tonsillitis.

Resolves toxins

  • Indicates a gentle detoxifying effect. Historically, this herb was prized for treating Yin-Deficiency type diphtheria—a serious throat infection that is now uncommon—where it could eliminate toxic heat and restore depleted Yin. It has also been traditionally recognized as an antidote to aconite (Wu Tou) poisoning.

Astringes the intestines

  • Refers to its capacity to solidify loose stools. The astringent flavor helps constrict and tighten the intestinal lining, making it useful for bacterial dysentery and acute enteritis, especially when there is heat and dampness in the Large Intestine.
