Millettia 9 was designed as a means of providing a high does of millettia extract in a prescription of supportive herbs. Millettia is the common name for several genera of herbs that have the same application, including Millettia, Spatholobus, and Macuna (Millettia is used here). Its properties are similar to those of salvia, which is said to have the same functions as the famous blood nourishing prescription, Tang-kuei Four Combination (Siwu Tang). To aid in nourishing and vitalizing blood circulation, these herbs are often combined with the qi tonic astragalus. One consideration in this formula design was modern Chinese treatments for bone marrow suppression. As an example, millettia, salvia, astragalus, and tang-kuei are used together in the formula Ji Qi Gui Zao Tang, used for treatment of leukopenia secondary to cancer therapies. Another formula, Blood-Raising Tea, also makes use of millettia, salvia, and astragalus; it is indicated for both leukopenia and anemia (red blood cell deficiency). Millettia, rehmannia, and salvia are ingredients of Tang-kuei and Millettia Combination (Danggui Jixueteng Tang; see Ancient and Modern Formulas) which was developed for treatment of injuries. Morus fruit, polygonum stem, and cnidium are added as additional blood nourishing agents. The formula also has other applications. Millettia is well-known for its ability to treat pain in the back and legs, numbness and paralysis, and abdominal pain (as occurs with menstrual cramping). Cnidium, dipsacus, and saussurea are all helpful in treating these pain syndromes. For nourishing blood, consider adding Iron Shou Gui (White Tiger).
