The warmest of the Spring Wind soft plasters, containing Cao Wu, Chuan Wu, and Rou Gui. Indicated for second-stage sinew damage or contusions presenting with swelling and pain that is notably aggravated by cold. Strongly warms the channels, quickens blood, and relieves pain. Select over Plaster #5 when the cold component is prominent. Heat lamp or moxibustion over the plaster can enhance effect. Applied to gauze on intact skin. For external use only.

Spring Wind's soft plasters are traditional Chinese herbal formulas prepared in an organic sesame oil and beeswax base. They are spread onto gauze and applied directly to the affected area. Do not apply to broken skin.

Blood-Quickening Powder Soft Plaster #6 is the warmest of the Spring Wind soft plaster line. Its formula includes powerful warming agents - notably Cao Wu (Aconite root, processed), Chuan Wu (Aconite root, Sichuan), and Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark) - that drive blood through the channels, penetrate cold obstruction, and powerfully relieve pain in cold-type bi patterns.

Clinical Applications

This formula is indicated for second-stage sinew damage or contusions presenting with swelling and pain that has a cold character - that is, the condition is notably aggravated by cold and improved by warmth. When the injury is clearly worse in cold weather, cold environments, or on contact with cold, Plaster #6 is the warming formula of choice. It is a step warmer than Tri-color Application Plaster #5 and is appropriate when the cold component of the presentation is strong. As with Plaster #5, the application of a heat lamp or moxibustion over the plaster can further enhance its effect.

TCM Actions

Strongly warms the channels and dispels cold, quickens blood and relieves pain, reduces swelling, penetrates cold obstruction in the channels and collaterals.

Application

Warm the plaster slightly to soften. Spread onto gauze and apply to the affected area. Secure with bandaging as needed. For enhanced effect, apply gentle heat via heat lamp or moxibustion over the plaster. Change daily or as directed by the practitioner. Soft plasters will stain fabric. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do not apply to broken skin.
