The Western scientific perspective on hair loss has been pretty well defined as an ailment of the skin wherein free testosterone gets changed to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) by 5-alpha-reductase enzymes that begin to form in the late twenties and thirties. This is a normal aging process and seems to be linked to the X chromosome. Males receive only one X chromosome which is always expressed and, therefore, they get the full effects of male-pattern balding. Females get two X chromosomes each of which is expressed randomly so they get a "mosaic" effect. With lower androgen levels than males, females who experience alopecia will mainly get thinning of the hair in the frontal, parietal and crown regions and rarely experience complete baldness in any area. The only successful Western treatment thus far for baldness is finestride a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It does not restore hair to regions of complete baldness, but does prevent further balding while it is used. It unfortunately carries with it the risk of sterilization in 1% of those tested. For some, this risk is too great and also suggests other, as yet unknown, side effects.*

Traditional Chinese Medicine views hair loss as a Blood deficiency wherein the Blood can not nourish the skin. This leads to Cou Li ("between muscle and skin" - like reticulo-endothelial immune function) weakness which then allows external Wind attack. The excess Wind leads to Blood dryness, and hair is lost due to a lack of nutrition. Emotional stress can also injure the Spleen and Heart over time and negatively affect hair growth. Alopecias specifically belong to Kidney Essence deficiency. Other pathologies which contribute are mental anxiety negatively affecting Heart and Spleen functions, Yin deficiency with excess Heat, or accumulation of Dampness and Heat arising to the head.*

This formula has the function of nourishing the Liver and Kidney, tonifying the Blood and eliminating Dampness and Heat.*
