The scent of this CO2-extracted Zhi Zi essential oil is robust and herbaceous, accented by a sharp bitter note. Its effects are cooling, clarifying, and calming. The energy resonates at the crown of the head and radiates into the eyes.

Gardenia fruit essential oil’s vivid red-orange hue reflects its connection to the Fire element, symbolizing the heart and blood, and influencing emotional states. Its primary role is to calm irritability, restlessness, and short temper by soothing the fire within.

CO2 extracted Gardeniae Fructus

(Gardenia Fruit, Shan Zhi Zi)

Zhi Zi enters the Triple Burner, Heart, Lung, Liver, and Stomach channels, exerting a broad influence. Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica) characterizes Zhi Zi as bitter and cold, stating that it "treats evil in the five internals” (referring to the five viscera).

For depression with irritability, consider combining Zhi Zi with Xiang Fu (Rz. Cyperi) and Chuan Xiong (Rx. Ligusticum walllichii).

To drain damp heat from the middle burner (Liver and Gall Bladder) and for jaundice, practitioners may consider combining Zhi Zi with Yin Chen Hao.

To quell stomach fire with hyperacidity, Zhi Zi with Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel) may be helpful.

A blend of Zhi Zi with Ce Bai Ye (Platycladus orientalis) and Wu Wei Zi (R. Schizandrae) may be a useful aid in treating bleeding caused by heat.

A Chinese folk remedy for injuries with pain, swelling, and bruising uses Zhi Zi with rice wine vinegar and egg white as a poultice.

Some of Gardenia Fructus’s known pharmacological effects include reducing gastric acid secretion, increasing stomach pH, and stimulating bile production. It has also demonstrated analgesic, antihypertensive, antibiotic, and hepatoprotective properties.
