The aroma of our Yin Yang Huo essential oil is rich and herbaceous with a garlic like warmth. Its taste on the tongue and olive-green color are reminiscent of pesto. Upon inhalation, energy rises to the ears while the dense, base aspect descends deeply to vibrate into the lower abdomen.

Yin Yang Huo essential oil is derived from Epimedium, a shade-loving perennial that thrives in temperate environments protected from intense sun and extreme dryness. Epimedium produces small yellow, white, or pale purple flowers from spring to early summer. Its heart-shaped or arrow-shaped leaves range from green to reddish tinged and are the primary medicinal component of the plant. The leaves are traditionally harvested in late spring to early summer after they have fully developed, then dried in the sun or shade.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Profile

In Chinese herbal medicine, Yin Yang Huo is valued as a Yang-tonifying herb with an affinity for the Kidney and Liver channels. The essential oil is traditionally used to strengthen Kidney Yang, particularly in applications associated with sexual vitality and libido. Its warming and strengthening character is also used when cold, dampness, and deficiency are factors affecting the joints, while its affinity for the Liver relates to the sinews.

Practitioners may combine Yin Yang Huo essential oil with She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Seed) and a small amount of Jasmine for applications to acupuncture points along the Liver and Kidney channels associated with the genitalia and sexual function.

For joint and sinew applications, Yin Yang Huo may also be combined with Du Huo (Angelica pubescentis), Du Zhong (Eucommia), Yun Shan (Spruce), and a small percentage of Gui Zhi/Gui Ye (Cinnamon twig and leaf). This combination may be prepared as a liniment in ethyl alcohol or as a massage oil with Safflower carrier oil to provide a warming application for the joints, bones, channels, and collaterals and to support comfort, sensation, and function.
