Ma Huang Gen (Ephedra Root)
Ma Huang Gen is the dried root and rhizome of Ephedra sinica. Unlike the stem (Ma Huang), the root has the opposite action, astringing the exterior and stopping sweating. It is classified as an astringent herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Actions & Indications:
- Astringes the exterior and stops sweating
Common Uses: Spontaneous sweating from exterior deficiency, night sweats from yin deficiency.
Properties: Sweet, astringent; neutral. Enters the Lung and Heart channels.
Note: Do not confuse with Ma Huang (Ephedra stem), which has opposite actions and promotes sweating.
