Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity) is a classical four-herb formula first recorded in the Wai Tai Mi Yao (Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library, 752 CE). It is the primary formula in the category of prescriptions that drain fire and resolve toxins. The formula employs bitter, cold agents across the three burners: Huang Lian drains Heart and Stomach fire; Huang Qin clears Lung and upper burner heat; Huang Bai clears Lower Burner damp-heat; and Zhi Zi drains fire through all three burners via the urine.
