Originating from the fertile Nile River Valley in Egypt, Carthamus migrated to China and other parts of Asia. The vibrant blossoms are harvested in summer once the petals turn bright red, and they are used medicine. signaling its affinity to the blood, the heart, and the Fire Element as a healing agent.

Hong Hua promotes blood circulation, nourishes the blood, and eliminates blood stasis, effectively reducing pain and breaking up stagnation and masses. Clinically, it is used for menstrual pain, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, external injuries, joint pain, skin eruptions (especially macular), and chest pain. Modern research also indicates its potential in treating conditions such as myocardial ischemia, inflammation, and cancer.

Hong Hua’s most well-known use is for pain relief. It effectively promotes blood circulation in the channels and collaterals, targeting conditions related to blood stasis or stagnation, such as acute injuries, joint pain, painful obstruction syndromes, hemiplegia, or paralysis. It is frequently employed in obstetrics and gynecology, where its uterine stimulant properties help alleviate pain and facilitate difficult labor, as well as postpartum issues like retained lochia. Additionally, it addresses menstrual disorders such as amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea.

Hong Hua has a longstanding tradition of use in treating dermatological conditions. Its ability to stimulate stagnant areas promotes blood flow and nutrient delivery. Topical application of this essential oil can support skin with dark purple spots, depigmentation, blood pooling, or hair loss. Macular eruptions, often caused by heat pushing blood out of the vessels, respond particularly well to Hong Hua.
