Hai Jin Sha (Lygodium Spore) Clears Heat; Promotes Urination; Unblocks Painful Urinary Dysfunction; Expels Stones; Eliminates Damp-Heat; Reduces Edema; Decreases Jaundice

Hai Jin Sha, known in pharmaceutical Latin as Spora Lygodii, is the spore of the Japanese Fern (Lygodium species) and a cornerstone herb in the category of Herbs that Drain Dampness. Prized in classical Chinese medicine for its ability to address Damp-Heat conditions affecting the lower urinary tract and biliary system, Hai Jin Sha is considered an essential herb for treating the pain and discomfort associated with all types of painful urinary dysfunction (Lin Syndrome).

TCM Herb Profile

Hai Jin Sha excels in draining Damp-Heat lurking at the Blood level of the Small Intestine and Bladder channels while simultaneously unblocking urinary painful urinary dysfunction and resolving toxicity. Many classical sources also classify this herb within the "Clear Heat and Relieve Toxicity" category, reflecting its broad utility in Heat-related conditions.

Its primary clinical application is Damp-Heat Painful Urinary Dysfunction of any type, with particular effectiveness in treating Stone Lin (urinary stones) and Blood Lin (hematuria). It can also be applied to biliary stones. In addition, Hai Jin Sha eliminates Damp-Heat, reduces edema, and decreases jaundice associated with swelling and fullness due to Spleen Dampness and Damp-Heat jaundice.

Herb Comparisons for Practitioners

Both Hai Jin Sha and Fol. Pyrrosiae (Shi Wei) clear Damp-Heat, unblock painful urinary dysfunction, and are used to treat Hot painful urinary dysfunction (Lin Syndrome) or hematuria. Shi Wei is especially good for bloody painful urinary dysfunction and Damp-Heat painful urinary dysfunction, and also treats cough and wheezing by clearing Lung Heat and irregular uterine bleeding by cooling Blood and stopping bleeding in the Lower Jiao. Hai Jin Sha is particularly effective at treating stony painful urinary dysfunction.

Both Hai Jin Sha and Hb. Lysimachiae (Jin Qian Cao) facilitate urination, unblock painful urinary dysfunction, and are commonly used together to treat Stone Lin leading to rough, painful urination. Hai Jin Sha clears Heat and unblocks Lin Syndrome, but also enters the Blood level to cool the Blood to treat Bloody Lin. Jin Qian Cao excels at facilitating the removal of Dampness and relieving jaundice and is often used to treat Damp-Heat jaundice and gallstones.
