Tian ma (gastrodia) is a problematic herb to import due to its endangered status under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Substances). It is unfortunately a plant no one has learned to grow. Luckily, in this case the mycelium of the fungus, Armillaria melia, contains high amounts of the constituent that has been identified as the active principle in tian ma. Blue Poppy credits the research of Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda in using this substitute.
